Project overview
Water scarcity affects over 5 billion people globally, with around 3 billion lacking proper sanitation. Climate change is intensifying these issues, even in regions like parts of Europe that were once considered less vulnerable. In response, the ATTRACT project introduces an innovative solution for “smart” buildings by developing a decentralized, solar-powered clean water production system that integrates directly into the building’s structure.
At its core, ATTRACT employs Vertical Multi-Effect Diffusion Desalination Solar Still (VMEDSS) technology, which captures and utilizes solar heat to produce safe, drinkable water. This system treats diverse water sources—including rainwater, gray water, and brackish water—making it especially relevant for communities facing limited access to clean water.
The ATTRACT solution is currently being developed and tested in varied climates, with pilot studies in northern and southern Europe, to ensure it functions efficiently across a broad range of environmental conditions. By harnessing renewable energy and maximizing the building’s natural cooling capacity, this solution is positioned to become a leading, energy-efficient technology in decentralized water production.
Goals and Impact
ATTRACT aims to set a new standard in sustainable water access by creating a scalable solution for clean water production in residential buildings. Through innovative solar-driven technology, the project seeks to deliver a reliable source of drinkable water that can adapt to different climates and environmental demands. By focusing on efficient resource use and rigorous field testing, ATTRACT is paving the way for a resilient, decentralized approach to water scarcity that meets both immediate needs and long-term sustainability goals.
Our contribution
Sorption Technologies SRL brings specialized expertise in sorption-based solutions for refrigeration and desalination to the ATTRACT project. As a key partner, Sorption Technologies will manufacture the two prototyping of the ATTRACT system, and later support the extensive testing performed at Politecnico di Torino. The final prototype design is based on the revision and optimization of the first design.
Drawing on its engineering and manufacturing knowledge, the company will drive an optimized, scalable design for ATTRACT, prioritizing durability, material excellence, and cost efficiency. By focusing on quality and manufacturability, Sorption Technologies aims to ensure that the ATTRACT solution meets both performance standards and market needs for long-term, sustainable water production.
